At our meetings, you can always count on good food, an interesting program, and great fellowship.

January 7 2025

This week @simisunsetrotary celebrated Rotarian Desiree's birthday!

We also welcomed Elena Brokaw from @museumofventuracounty who presented the early history of Ventura County. It was very interesting and we all learned a lot from the short presentation. I suggest you check out https://venturamuseum.org/ for more information on what they have to offer at their 2 locations. I know I will be making a visit to learn more soon.

On December 17 Rotary After Dark's Brian Neiens spoke to us about his employer Waste Management's impact on Simi Valley and their recycling program. He reviewed the volume of recyclables WM handles each year, what happens to the various recyclables, and how we, as consumers, can help recycle even more by following Waste Management's guidelines. The Rotary Club of Simi Sunset (aka Rotary After Dark) will be off for the holidays. But you can join us in January 2025 at our new location at 99.1 The Ranch each Tuesday at 7pm! On December 10th we had an off-site meeting at Rotary After Dark's very own Devon Cohen's detail shop Black Opal Automotive. www.blackopalautomotive.com specialize in detailing, wraps, and window tinting. The club received lessons on what it takes to bring that mirror like shine to your old paint. Devon also owns Pretty Good Detailing which specializing in high end detailing and education for upcoming car lovers who want to learn how to detail like the pros. From local experts in car detailing to pageant queens, to local heroes from the emergency services, we always have an interesting topic at our Tuesday meetings. You can find out more information any Tuesday in 2025 at our new location at 99.1 The Ranch at the Simi Town Center Mall.

On December 3rd we had a visit from Mrs. California herself Erin Cooper! Erin spoke about being a 2 time cancer survivor, her path through the California pageant system, and her Queens Against Cancer non-profit organization. November 12, 2024

Time to do a little catch up on what's been happening with Simi Sunset Rotary! On November 12th Wen Chen visited our club and discussed China's global impact and the growing position of China in the world. It was a great insight into what China is doing and why.

We also celebrated some club anniversaries and birthdays with a few of our members.

October 8th Alex Arndt, solar expert

This week our Rotary After Dark members heard from recognized solar power expert, and eco-musician, Alex Arndt. Alex walked us through the benefits of solar power, what is coming in the near future, and how his music echoes his passion for solar power and the environment.

Rotary After Drk supports a clean environment, such as our trash pickup program for Tierra Rejada, and globally through Rotary International.

October 1st Police Chief Steve Shorts

October 1st we had the pleasure of Simi Valley Police Department Chief Steve Shorts walking our club through the history and need of School Resource Officers in our high school campuses. It was an interesting dive into why they were brought into our schools, the positive impact they have had on our students, and the benefits from this investment in placing these officers on campuses in our city.

September 24, District Govenor's Dinner

September 24th the Rotary Club of Simi Sunset members had the honor of hosting our #district5240 governor Sherry PeckHoon Sim for our meeting and dinner. It was a great occasion as our District Governor shared her Rotary journey with our club and her goals for the year. Sherry's theme for this year is "Rotary is Love" and you could feel it all night long. It was a great event and we thank Sherry for taking the time to be with our club.

Tonight was an extra special night as we awarded a Paul Harris award to Samir Rafeh, the highest honor a Rotarian can receive.

September 17 recap

It was a busy night on Tuesday! Rotary After Dark(RAD) member Rick Grossman walked the club through Rotary International's Foundation. The Foundation is the core financial arm of Rotary International and supports our programs like Reading by Nine and Shoes for Little Souls. Our Blood Drive completed this evening as well, with 17 participants. Way to go Simi Sunset!

We also celebrated the 2 year club anniversary for 2 members, Sam Rafeh and Josh Platten. Sam couldn't make it that night but we persuaded Josh to take a photo!

In addition to celebrating RADster Brian Neiens's 40th birthday!

Afterwards we had a guest speaker from For The Need Foundation to discuss their upcoming charity pickle ball tournament. All proceeds go to fund the projects and kids supported by this fine organization.

September 10 meeting recap

Tuesday's meeting this week, club President Rob Sherman celebrated Rotary Club of Simi Sunset's Wayne Snyder and his wife Marilyn's 35th wedding anniversary! Congrats to the both of you!

Our speaker that evening was Dr. Eldad "Dr. E" Einav. Dr E is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), a

Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and an Active member of the Obesity Medical Association.

Dr E spoke to us about the obesity epidemic, the increase in obesity through the decades, partially due to over processed foods, and their impact on humans. Then moved on to the revolution in weight loss with Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, also known as GLP-1 agonists. It was quite interesting to hear about these drugs and their impact on our health, even beyond their ability to help us lose weight.
