Sara Lazarus began her career with the State of California as a contracted security officer working a cold, lonely back gate at the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) equipment shop headquarters in Downtown Sacramento, CA. After being promoted to Captain, she became a frontline supervisor to over three hundred and fifty officers. She spent her days traveling to cities from Redding to Calexico and literally everywhere in between.

After two and a half years of applying and interviewing, she was hired to a part-time job with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in El Dorado County,
working along the US-50 corridor. Her duties involved vehicle screening, snow removal, highway maintenance and accident response, among other things.

After being hired to a full-time position in Red Bluff, CA, she was nominated, interviewed for and was hired to the Statewide Honor Guard as the first female member to come up through the ranks since it’s beginning, over twenty-two years ago. She is the third female member.

Sara recently moved back to Los Angeles and is now a member of the District 7 Night North Bridge Crew. This crew is responsible for conducting maintenance operations on all state-owned bridges in Ventura County and all bridges in Los Angeles County North of the 10 Freeway.

We are happy to have her here with us this evening to speak about the Statewide Honor Guard and her duties on the Bridge Crew. Please welcome Sara Lazarus.
